- 1859-S Liberty Seated Quarter. Briggs 1-A, the only known dies. VF-25 (PCGS).
Attractive mid grade quality for this challenging early San Francisco Mint issue. Otherwise light silver-gray surfaces exhibit enhancing blushes of cobalt blue and reddish-rose iridescence that are more extensive on the reverse. All major features are bold, the surfaces a tad glossy in texture, yet uncommonly free of major marks for an 1859-S quarter that saw considerable commercial use. A highly elusive issue due to a limited mintage of 80,000 pieces and a high rate of attrition suffered through extensive circulation on the West Coast, where silver saw uninterrupted use through the Civil War and Reconstruction eras.
PCGS# 5450. NGC ID: 23TN.
