Lot Description

Since the Mint did not begin recording the number of Proof minor coins struck each year until 1878, the mintage of this issue can only be estimated based on the number of pieces extant and allowing for the usual rate of attrition. We suspect that at least 850 Proofs were struck, perhaps as many as 1,100 specimens. Among the survivors, very few are as PQ at the Gem level of preservation as this fully struck, satin to semi-reflective example. Vivid mint orange color and lilac-blue undertones backlight warm medium brown patina.
