Lot Description
1839-O Capped Bust Half Dollar. Reeded Edge. HALF DOL. GR-1. Rarity-1. Repunched Mintmark. AU-53 (PCGS). This richly original example exhibits warm charcoal-blue, reddish-gold and salmon pink patina, the bolder and deeper colors reserved for the obverse. Both sides retain sharp striking detail to most design elements, as well as ample remnants of original satin luster. This is the second time the New Orleans mintmark appeared on the obverse of the half dollar, the first time of course on the extremely rare 1838-O half dollar. The 1839-O is the only realistically obtainable mintmarked half dollar of the Capped Bust design type as far as most collectors are concerned, although we stress that most survivors are well worn, impaired, or both. Even most certified AU examples in straight-graded holders that we have handled over the years do not possess the undeniable originality and strong eye appeal of this piece. A find for the discerning collector that is sure to sell for a strong premium. Provenance: From the Greenway Collection. Stack's paper envelope included. PCGS# 6181. NGC ID: 24G7.
