Lot Description
1794 Liberty Cap Cent. S-25. Rarity-3. Head of 1794. VF-35 (NGC). Solid Choice Very Fine quality and a pleasing example of both the popular 1794 date and the uncommon Sheldon 25 die pair. Glossy medium-brown surfaces with underlying shades of mahogany and tan, the copper predominantly hard and smooth with only tiny marks seen on the portrait and a few trivial specks of inactive verdigris on the reverse. Well struck for the variety with better than average strength of detail to the legends and borders around each side. Very Fine per EAC standards, which this piece clearly qualifies for, is a commendable grade for S-25 considering only a half dozen or so examples are known in EF or higher. Middle die state with clash marks on both sides and no cracks. DS2 per Chuck Heck's excellent new book on 1794 large cent die states. PCGS# 1365. NGC ID: 223M.
