1868 Shield Nickel. FS-901. Reverse of 1868, Variety 1. MS-66 (NGC). Lovely champagne-apricot iridescence blends with intense satiny luster on both sides of this sharply struck, expertly preserved Gem. This particular variety of the Reverse of 1868 hub type is identifiable by a broken lower serif on the letter C in CENTS. Provenance: From the Q. David Bowers Collection. Housed in an older NGC holder that uses the outdated FS-002.94 attribution, this coin does not appear in the current online version of the NGC Census, which actually lists no examples of the 1868 FS-901 variety.
