Lot Description

Superior quality for this popular classic commemorative type. Blushes of champagne-gold and ice-blue iridescence visit both sides and provide strong eye appeal. Fully lustrous and satiny in finish. This half dollar type commemorates the beginning of a carving on Stone Mountain, Georgia, of a memorial to the soldiers of the Southern Confederacy who fought during the Civil War. The carving began on June 18, 1923, and is now regarded as the largest bas-relief sculpture in the world. It depicts two of the most famous Confederate leaders of the Civil War riding on their favorite horses: General Robert E. Lee and "Traveller;" and General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson and "Little Sorrel." From a mintage of 2,310,000 half dollars, 1,310,000 were sold to raise funds for the monument.
