Lot Description
THE SOMMELIER COLLECTION B-5, BB-27. This is the most common die marriage for the 1795 Flowing Hair type and this really high end CHOICE AU example is PERFECT for the grade and PERFECT for a type set. Both sides show a touch of wear and some retained satiny brilliance glows along the edges of the classic early design. The details also remain boldly defined, clearly the initial strike was precise and crisp. There are full separation in Liberty's tresses, stars, and eagle's facial features. Colorful peripheral toning yields to a golden-pewter-silver in the centers. There are some minor traces of contact and a few tiny marks from its brief time in early federal era circulation. The eye appeal is sensational for a type, date, and grade; we wish more 1795 dollars in AU looked like this! PCGS 33, NGC 24, CAC 4. Clearly most pieces are NOT at all attractive, otherwise CAC would have stickered more pieces. This is the ONLY CAC-approved AU53 ever sold in auction, selling in the 2009 FUN auction, as part of the James Mossman Collection. Back then, this coin sold for $25,300; today the CAC CPG value is $26,400. We suspect that more than 12 years off the market let this coin's value mature, and will bring a similarly strong bid today. What a great type coin! Cert. Number 10003551 PCGS # 6852.00
