Lot Description: Examples of the 1850-C Winter-4 Weak C attribution are seldom offered with the abundant mint luster and generally bold strike detail that are apparent on both sides of this half eagle. The mintmark is characteristically weak, yet readily evident with the aid of a loupe; most other design elements are sharply to fully rendered in the absence of all but light wear. Frosty in texture with pretty, soft orange-honey color, this half eagle is sure to sell for a strong winning bid.<p>Charlotte Mint half eagle production remained relatively high going into the 1850s, achieved primarily from North Carolina gold, as before, with limited deposits of South Carolina and, from 1851 through 1856, California gold also playing a part. The first issue of that decade, the 1850-C had a mintage of 63,951 pieces and is one of the more available dates in this Southern gold series. Circulated examples in VF and EF are particularly desirable for inclusion in mintmarked gold type sets. With no contemporary numismatic interest in these coins, however, the rigors of commerce claimed most 1850-C fives with the result that even problem free Choice About Uncirculated survivors are rare. This piece is among the finest certified for the Weak C attribution and would do justice to an advanced gold cabinet.
