Lot Description

Breen Die State IV. An otherwise bold Choice Fine example with minor softness confined to the central reverse, involving the letter T in CENT and the adjacent portion of the wreath. Color is original and attractive in warm, medium chestnut-brown. A few dull nicks in the obverse field before Liberty's mouth and chin are the only individually mentionable marks. This is a rare and conditionally challenged Sheldon number, the Condition Census made up almost exclusively of coins with EAC grades of F12 to VF35. The Widmer Family specimen is included in the Noyes census as tied for CC#8 with an EAC grade of F12. The Bland census, as published in the 2000 reference <em>Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of Early United States Cents: 1793-1814</em>, includes several coins in F12, but not this specific piece.
