Lot Description
Lot 131 1808 S-279 R1. PCGS graded MS-64 Brown.Beautiful, highly lustrous bluish steel and medium olive brown. Mint frost covers this cent, even the highest points of the devices, and the eye appeal is outstanding. The only marks, and they are barely visible, are four tiny ticks near the dentil tips left of the date and a faint spot of darker toning (not carbon) at the top of the C in CENT. Sharply struck with complete radial lines in all the stars and crisp details on all the devices. A wonderful Classic Head cent. This is the plate coin for the variety in Dr. Sheldon's Penny Whimsy and in the 1991 Noyes reference on the early date large cents. Graded MS63 Choice and tied for CC#1 honors with a relatively mushy late die state example in the Noyes census, his photo #20279. Bland says MS61 and tied for CC#2. Our grade is MS63. A great cent that comes with an equally impressive provenance that goes back over 100 years. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 1 finer in 66.(PCGS # 36463) Value $40,000 - UP Ex F. W. Lincoln (W. S. Lincoln & Son, London) 8/1891-Benjamin H. Collins 1937-B. Max Mehl Collection-T.
