Lot Description

Pretty colors in deep, vivid, reddish-honey and orange-gold blanket both sides. Ample luster remains in a softly frosted texture, the fields modestly semi-reflective when viewed at direct lighting angles. Sharply defined in the presence of light wear, faint hairlines, and a touch of glossiness to the texture. With 457,000 pieces produced, the 1906-S has a respectable mintage for a late date San Francisco Mint eagle of this type. Attrition through melting, however, was such that Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth observe in the 2008 edition of their <em>Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins: 1795-1933</em>, "Like the 1905-S issue, the 1906-S eagle is an unexpected rarity among the 20th-century eagles." This is a visually pleasing PCGS AU-50 that would do nicely in many collections of circulated U.S. Mint gold coinage.
