Lot Description
Exceptionally sharp striking detail and full, softly frosted luster set this important condition rarity apart from the typically encountered 1942-D/D nickel. Virtually brilliant throughout. This is a rare and prized mint blunder, not just any typical mispunched D mintmark, but it was first entered sideways -- with the straight line of that letter at the top and the curved portion facing down. This blunder is particularly unusual and popular with collectors, furthermore there simply are not many known. The present offering is one of the finest seen by PCGS with the desirable sharp strike and Full Bands designation. Listed in the Guide Book as well, which greatly increases interest. To date PCGS has graded just a few hundred of this variety, most of course in circulated grades, and a mere 11 with the desirable Full Steps designation. Needless to say the lucky collector who lands this prize when the hammer at the auction falls will have a coin he or she can always be proud to own, as it is undoubtedly one of the very finest of this desirable and well known issue.
