Lot Description
Obv: George T. Morgan's famed Liberty head used on the silver dollar of that year, with the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA surrounding and the date 1879 below. Rev: A continuous wreath of laurel with berries encircles an inner beaded border, in which are the Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, the denomination ONE DIME, and 13 small stars. This peripherally toned jewel exhibits iridescent olive-russet and blue-green iridescence around silver-apricot centers. An exacting strike has called forth even the most intricate elements of the design. Wispy hairlines from ancient numismatic handling account for the numeric grade, but this gently cameoed specimen presents very well at all viewing angles.
An elusive and highly prized rarity from the Morgan pattern series. Somewhat more than a dozen specimens of Judd-1588 in silver are known, and with market appearances usually few and far between, the fleeting nature of this offering cannot be overstated.
