Description du lot
Tompkins Die Stage indeterminate, Rea et al. Die State a. This boldly and originally toned example exhibits warm pewter gray patina with deeper charcoal-olive highlights in the protected areas around some of the design elements. Wear is heavy, and also uneven, with the right third of the obverse, lower left and lower right reverse areas showing little to no detail. The balance of the obverse retains outline to bold definition to the major design elements, the date sharp, while the boldest definition on the reverse is seen within the star field and above. A thin planchet lamination at left reverse is as made, obverse with a few light scratches to Liberty's portrait.<p>The first quarter dollar produced in the United States Mint since 1796, and the first issue in the Heraldic Eagle portion of the Draped Bust series, the 1804 is also a key date coin with a mintage of just 6,738 pieces. Browning-1, offered here, is the more frequently encountered of the known die marriages. It is readily attributable on most examples by the presence of a die scratch (as made) on the obverse in between stars 8 and 9. On the present coin, however, the right obverse is worn smooth with stars 8 and 9 lost to circulation, but the B-1 attribution is still easy to confirm since the digit 4 in the date is centered between the bust and denticles.
