Lot Description
148.6 grains. Attractive medium brown with some areas of darker toning on the mostly glossy obverse, more even medium brown on the reverse. The obverse is aligned to the right, with the legends on that side blending into the rim. An arc of denticles and the die edge are visible at right. The reverse is well centered but is scattered with significant pits, mostly around the periphery, and some fairly modern scratches are seen at the center of the shield. The die state is tough to determine given the surface quality of the reverse, but it is likely SHI Die State 3. The obverse shows a bit of verdigris around the plow and some planchet texture roughness on the softly struck right side, but is still pretty sharp and attractive.<p>The 2024 SHI Census is populated by VF coins, with four VFs atop and 2 VF- coins rounding out the six-deep listing. We've sold two of them since the fifth ranked Ford coin sold in 2003. Ranked second, the E Pluribus Unum - Syd Martin coin is graded EF-45 (PCGS). It brought $6,000 in the November 2019 E Pluribus Unum sale and $6,600 in the August 2022 Syd Martin sale. The Dr. Gordon Shaw coin, with EF sharpness but significant granularity, is ranked sixth on the most recent census; it brought $2,350 when we sold it in March 2017. We've never seen a perfect example of this variety (though the EPU-Martin coin was really nice), leaving ones like this well within the range of suitability for advanced specialty collectors.
