Lot Description
1866 Liberty Head Quarter Eagle. AU-55 (PCGS). This is an exceptionally vivid example with iridescent reddish-rose overtones to a base of deep golden-orange patina. Sharply defined overall with plenty of original luster remaining. Circulation strike quarter eagle production at the Philadelphia Mint remained limited in 1866 as gold specie payments had not yet resumed despite the cessation of hostilities in the Civil War the year before. While not quite as rare as the 1864 or 1865, the 1866 is still an elusive quarter eagle that can be difficult to obtain in any grade. The mintage is a scant 3,080 circulation strikes, and with Uncirculated coins particularly rare this handsome Choice AU survivor is sure to catch the eye of astute gold specialists. PCGS Population: 7; 6 finer, just two of which are Mint State (MS-65 finest). PCGS# 7803. NGC ID: 25K7. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
