- This incredible Carson City Mint strike and condition rarity displays deep golden-honey color with a blush of pinkish-orange overall. Bountiful mint luster dominates the in hand appearance, and it is remarkably reflective in the fields to contrast satiny motifs. Bold to sharp striking detail is also very much in evidence. Numerous wispy handling marks point to decades spent jostling around with other double eagles in a cloth bag, but none of these features are singularly distracting, and the preservation is solidly Mint State.
Positioned late in this mintmarked gold series, the 1892-CC double eagle enjoyed an above average rate of survival in an absolute sense, but was long considered unobtainable in Mint State. Unlike early date CC-Mint twenties, which were largely used in domestic commerce, many examples from this 27,265-piece issue were exported, and the ones that were not shipped overseas circulated heavily. Rusty Goe (2020) estimates that perhaps 1,050 to 1,300 examples survive of this issue, and, from that number, only 195 to 255 are Mint State - most of which were repatriated from European bank hoards in the second half of the last century. While any high grade 1892-CC double eagle represents a true numismatic prize, this premium Mint State example is of further significance as the only PL-designated coin currently listed on the PCGS Population Report. It will certainly attract strong bids when it crosses the auction block.
