Lot Description
1847 Braided Hair Cent. N-24, 25, 9. Rarity-1. MS-65 RB (PCGS). CAC. An exceptionally well produced 1840s cent with bold to sharp definition throughout the design. Much of the original deep rose-orange mint color remains, with only minimal fading to iridescent steel-brown at the high points and in the open field areas. There are no marks of note, leaving it to small reverse spots below the letters E in STATES and O in ONE to identify this significant condition rarity in future market appearances. Grellman Die State a (N-24), with numerous die finishing lines in the obverse field. Although Bob Grellman (2021) describes this as one of the easier Newcomb numbers of the 1847 cent to locate in Mint State, this high Condition Census offering represents a fleeting opportunity for specialists. Described as "MS67 and tied for CC#1 in the Noyes census...Our grade is MS66, tied for CC#1 in the Grellman census" when cataloged for the Goldberg's September 2009 Naftzger Part III sale. Provenance: Ex Dr. George P. French; B. Max Mehl's sale of June 1945, lot 1915; Dr. Kenneth J. Sartoris; Del Bland; Jerry A. Bobbe, June 1979; Ira & Larry Goldberg's sale of the Ted Naftzger Collection, Part III, September 2009 Pre-Long Beach Auction, lot 785. Goldberg's lot tag, Naftzger envelope and J.R. Grellman tag with attribution and provenance notes included. PCGS# 37326. NGC ID: 226D. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
