Lot Description
148.1 grains. Glossy chocolate brown with mostly smooth surfaces and profoundly attractive visual appeal. Both sides are well struck and well centered, with a subtle arc of denticles visible at the northwest obverse periphery and a nearly complete around the reverse that is boldest and thickest at lower right. A few minor fissures are seen on the obverse, including one at IN of BUSINESS and subtler ones in the sunrays. The reverse fissures are less deep and less bold, visible principally at the right and left periphery. We find no marks or damage worthy of note, indeed, this is a particularly choice example for the grade. The obverse shows two close sets of die clashes, the reverse just one. The obverse crack and internal break at U of YOUR place this as Newman obverse state C. The reverse cracks at 7 o'clock and inside the ring at 6 o'clock denote this as Newman reverse state C.<p>This is a nicer example than the Newman 6-Ws included in many advanced collections. Both the Syd Martin (ex Scarinci) and the Star of Texas collection coins were graded PCGS AU-50. The Martin duplicate was graded EF-45+ (PCGS). The only other examples we've had graded PCGS EF-45 or better were both the same grade as this one: Ford's primary coin (last sold in our sale of June 2022) and another example we sold in November 2017. This is not a particular rare or heralded variety, but it sure is tough to find better than this.
