- Although previously cataloged as a Kagin-3 No Period example in its earlier auction appearances listed below, close inspection with a loupe reveals faint traces of the period after the letter Y in ALLOY, confirming our K-4 attribution. This is a handsome VF example of a challenging California Gold Rush era type, with subtle olive undertones to dominant dusky honey-orange color. The strike is a bit off center to 12 o'clock on the obverse, with no denticulation along the upper border, but the reverse is better centered, and both sides retain sufficiently bold detail to all major design elements. Most of the numerous tiny marks on both sides are singularly inconspicuous during in-hand viewing, although accuracy compels us to mention a pair of dull obverse scrapes over and above the eagle's head. Historic, scarce, and always in demand.
