Lot Description

Mintage: 16,000. 3 graded MS-62, 9 higher at PCGS. Ex-PCGS 4252422 where it was graded the same, and presumably placed into a newer holder for superior protection. Given the small mintage, it is no wonder 1870-S is so rare at the mint-state grade, and an example need not reach full choice quality to be very desirable on the open market. This example boasts surprisingly robust luster and variegated copper-gold and amber hues, but also some light hairlines in the fields. An energetic strike produced bold, nearly full details throughout.
