- 1817 Capped Bust Half Dollar. O-104. Rarity-6. VF-25 (PCGS).
Mottled steely-charcoal patina enlivens a base of pewter gray, the former color more widely distributed on the reverse. Well centered on the planchet with the central obverse a bit softly defined for the assigned grade, the result of incompleteness of strike, while the reverse offers bold VF definition throughout. This is a rare variety at all levels of preservation, the census for the early die state without obverse cracks as provided by Stephen J. Herrman (Spring 2019): 50; 40/45; 40; 40; 40; 4; 3. Off the market since the late 1980s and not included in the Herrman listing, this PCGS VF-25 qualifies as Condition Census for the 1817 Overton-104 attribution. A significant find for the advanced early half dollar variety collector.
Provenance: From the E. Horatio Morgan Collection.
PCGS# 39494. NGC ID: 24F6.
