1945 Mercury Dime. MS-64 FB (NGC). This P-mint issue enjoys a fully deserved and widely recognized reputation as the rarest late-date Mercury Dime with Full Bands striking detail. The exigencies of wartime production caused quality control to go by the wayside in the Philadelphia Mint, resulting in the creation of millions of ill-defined coins for the 1945-P. A noteworthy departure from the norm, the near-Gem we offer here is sharply struck over all features to include the central-reverse crossbands. Brilliant on the obverse, the reverse exhibits a bit of light pale-gold iridescence that appears to drift toward the upper border. Uncommonly smooth even at the near-Gem grade level.
