- 1855-O Liberty Head Half Eagle. Winter-1, the only known dies. AU-55 (PCGS).
An exciting find for advanced Southern gold enthusiasts, this minimally circulated example retains overall bold to sharp striking detail and plenty of mint luster. Attractively patinated, as well, blushes of faint pinkish-rose blend with dominant honey-orange. The rarest of the three low mintage New Orleans Mint half eagles of 1855 to 1857, the 1855-O has a mintage of just 11,100 pieces. Survivors are thought to number no more than 100 or so coins in all grades. This issue is a rarity of significant stature at the Choice AU and Mint State grade levels, the present offering an important bidding opportunity for specialists.
Provenance: From the Steve Studer Collection.
PCGS Population: 6; 7 finer, just four of which are Mint State (all MS-61).
PCGS# 8264. NGC ID: 25UT.
