Lot Description: A splendid mintmarked type candidate and a coin that would also do justice to a high quality Indian eagle set. Lustrous and satiny, the surfaces are further enhanced by pretty pinkish-honey color. The strike is expectably sharp for the issue and there are no singularly conspicuous marks that inhibit either the quality or eye appeal.<p>The Denver Mint commenced coinage of $10 eagles in 1910 on January 25. By year's end the mintage reached 2,356,640 pieces, the largest total for any issue in the series after only the 1932. Unusual for a mintmarked Indian eagle, the 1910-D was exported to Europe in quantity. Many circulated domestically in the West, as well, and these accounted for the majority of examples available in Mr. Stack's time. Mint State coins were scarce around mid-century, on the other hand, but thanks in part to the substantial mintage David Akers' auction survey (published 1980) showed fairly consistent offerings beginning with B. Max Mehl's Belden E. Roach sale in 1944 and continuing into the 1970s. The population swelled thereafter as thousands of Uncirculated coins began returning to U.S. shores from foreign bank hoards. Today the 1910-D is the most plentiful mintmarked Indian eagle in Mint State and the third most common after the 1932 and 1926. That offered here is thoroughly PQ at the Choice Uncirculated level and worthy of strong bids.
