- The transitional 1793 Liberty Cap cent is a key date issue in the early copper series with a mintage across all die pairings of just 11,056 pieces, all of which were delivered on September 18 of that year. Shortly thereafter, the Mint closed its doors so that employees could join the exodus of Philadelphians fleeing the yearly yellow fever epidemic that swept the city. Cold winter weather finally allowed the Mint to reopen on November 12, although no more cents were forthcoming until January 10, 1794. With approximately 7,000 to 7,200 coins struck Sheldon-13 is the most frequently encountered die marriage of the 1793 Liberty Cap issue. The offered coin is an appropriate filler for the budget-minded collector.
