1865-S Liberty Quarter Eagle. AU-53 (NGC). Uncommonly well struck by the standards of this challenging issue, even the central-obverse and -reverse highpoints are boldly defined. Wear is minimal and hardly detracting, and there are no sizeable or otherwise individually mentionable abrasions. Light hairlining and a somewhat glossy surface texture are noted, however, although both sides have still managed to hold on to some of the original luster in isolated areas around the devices. A relatively obtainable issue in well-worn condition, the 1865-S (23,376 coins struck) increases exponentially in rarity once one crosses out of the EF grade range and arrives at the AU and Mint State levels.
