A jaw-dropping upper end Gem with few peers - and no superiors - among 1906-O Liberty Head eagles certified in the modern numismatic market. Luxurious deep olive-gold color is enhanced by vivid orange and pale pinkish-rose patina. Bountiful mint luster is also seen on both sides, the texture softly frosted with subtle semi-reflective qualities evident as the coin rotates under strong lighting. Sharply struck, carefully preserved, and a delight to behold.<p>The 1906-O is the final New Orleans Mint eagle, and the penultimate gold issue from this Southern coinage facility (the final is the 1909-O Indian half eagle). It is among the scarcer New Orleans Mint tens of the Motto design type, although locating an example in the MS-60 to MS-62 grade range should prove fairly easy under normal market conditions. Most lower grade Uncs are repatriations from foreign bank hoards beginning in the late 20th century, which have swelled the Mint State population to 550 to 700 or more coins (per Doug Winter, <em>Gold Coins of the New Orleans Mint: 1839-1909</em>, 2025 edition). An early and exceptional numismatic acquisition by Mr. Stack, however, the present example now joins two other PCGS MS-66s as tied for CC#1 for the 1906-O eagle in today's market: the November 2000 Bass IV coin, lot 780, ex Gaston DiBello; and the coin offered as lot 1944 in RARCOA's session of Auction '88 (certified PCGS MS-65 at the time). This is an awesome condition rarity and breathtakingly beautiful Gem that will impress even the most discerning collector of New Orleans Mint or Liberty Head gold coinage.
