Lot Description
132.5 grains. An impressive near-Gem example of this variety, one of the finest survivors we've seen from the Bank of New York hoard. Gloriously frosty and thoroughly lustrous, this piece displays a great deal of faded mint color, especially around design elements, otherwise mellowed to a sedate and attractive shade of steel and milk chocolate brown. Exceptional eye appeal defines both sides, with no significant flaws other than some scattered flecks here and there, most visible at the lower half of the reverse. The obverse is aligned to roughly 8 o'clock, with a substantial flat area at the rim from 1 o'clock to 4 o'clock. The reverse is similarly aligned, with a broad ring of softly struck denticles at lower right. The central devices of both dies are superbly well struck, making this an ideal type coin for the person who seeks just one example of this issue or of the UNITED STATES reverse type.
This is the plate coin in Newman for the Obverse State B, Reverse State D die state, denoted by the short crack to the first 7 of the date on the obverse and a very light crack into the outline of the ring at 8 o'clock. A single crisp clash of the obverse design is noted on the reverse.
PCGS has certified only 18 Fugios with the UNITED STATES reverse in higher grades, including both BN and RB designations. Only four pieces have been certified by them as MS-64+ BN.
