Lot Description
An incredible ORIGINAL GEM B-3 which ranks among the Condition Census specimens of this Rarity-3 die marriage. The die variety is interesting, as it is the same obverse die used on B-1, the 1818/5 overdate, but in this use of the die, the surfaces were lapped, removing most traces of the underlying 5. With the aid of a strong glass, you can still see vestiges of the upright of the 5 on the upper curve of the 8. Sharply struck from a middle die state with bold clashing of the dies and the small die crack from the rim to the lower arrowhead, through the shafts, and into the field. A sultry, satiny luster glows boldly on both sides giving life to the pearly-gray, pale gold, and iridescent lilac toning. The definition is sharp and crisp from an exacting blow from the screw press. This totally original GEM is incredible! A fantastic early Bust quarter, perfect for type or date purposes. PCGS 24, NGC 21, CAC 5. The most recent PCGS/CAC MS65 sold in our December 2019 Regency Auction for $30,550. The PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $32,500 and the CAC CPG value is listed at $36,000. PCGS has graded just five finer; and the last PCGS/CAC MS66 sold for $67,563 nearly eight years ago! This exceptional GEM will delight any collector. Good luck. Cert. Number 6564965 PCGS # 5322
