Lot Description
1806 Draped Bust Half Dollar. O-111a, T-11. Rarity-4. 6/Inverted 6. VF-35 (NGC). CAC. A remarkably handsome representative of this scarce variety with lavender-grey surfaces and tinges of golden iridescence. The surfaces are smooth and without abrasions under magnification. A minor planchet flaw hides behind the stripes at the top of the shield, though this is as-made and should not be mistaken for damage. Both the obverse and reverse show significant wear equivalent to Tompkins Die Stages 4/6. A thin crack bisects the entire obverse, spanning from the rim below the 8 and passing through the E of LIBERTY. The reverse shows two significant break, with a large cud over the E in UNITED and a thick crack over UN that is just on the cusp of becoming a cud itself. A desirable piece that is as beautiful as it is fascinating. Provenance: From the Sutton Court Collection of Early Half Dollar Varieties. Earlier ex from New Hampshire Rare Coin Galleries' Mail Bid Sale of December 1985, lot 1776. NCG Census: 12; 6 finer through MS-61 (O-111a variety only). PCGS# 6078. NGC ID: CZEY.
