Lot Description
1853-DERI Octagonal $1. BG-518. Rarity-5. Liberty Head. MS-61 (PCGS). OGH. Crudely reeded edge. An exceptional representative example of the variety and grade combination. Boldly lustrous deep yellow gold surfaces exhibit a lively olive glow. One of the famous "DERI" dollars from the firm of M. Deriberpie, active in San Francisco circa 1852-1854. Maker's mark, DERI, at bottom of reverse. Struck from a rusted obverse die that imparted a stippled effect to the obverse portrait of Liberty. Die State III: "Reverse cracks extending as in 517. Three cracks from rim extend through C, beads to LA; below left star through beads to 18; ER through beads and 8." Mispunched R high in field between second L and A of DOLLAR. Choice for the grade. PCGS# 10495. Provenance: From the Ronald Lyle Collection.
