Tompkins Die Stage 2/1, Rea et al. Die State P. An absolutely stunning example of this prized Browning number. Both sides are vividly toned with a bold target-like distribution to reddish-russet, sunset-gold, powder blue and silver-rose colors. The surfaces are near-fully lustrous with a pronounced frosty to semi-reflective finish. Boldly to sharply struck throughout with an exceptionally smooth, well composed appearance in a lightly circulated Large Diameter Capped Bust quarter.
Requests for this denomination from contemporary bullion depositors decreased during calendar year 1819, when only 144,000 quarters were delivered. The Browning-1 is the rarest of the four known die pairings, and its obverse is distinct from that of B-2, these being the two Large 9 varieties. The reverse is also unique to the B-1 pairing and is distinguished by the location of the left scroll end, which is under the right tip of the letter E in UNITED. The fabulous Eliasberg specimen remains the only known Mint State survivor; it appeared in our Pogue I Sale of May 2015 certified MS-65 by PCGS. Among the rest of the survivors, well worn coins are the norm. Apparently well concealed in a collection at the time of publication for the 2008 Tompkins and 2010 Rea et al. listings, the offered coin in NGC/CAC AU-58 is not included in either census. It is tied for CC#2 with one of grading event in NGC/CAC AU-58, presumably the Glenn Marx specimen listed in the Rea et al. census. Breathtakingly beautiful, and of the utmost importance to advanced early quarter variety enthusiasts, this exquisite near-Mint 1819 B-1 will require the most aggressive strategy from the lucky winning bidder.
Steve M. Tompkins Commentary: My lower grade set piece had been in my collection for 12 years when this very scarce coin showed up at auction. Where had this beauty been all my collecting life? After fierce bidding it came home with me to finally upgrade the 1819 B-1 variety in my set.
