- Uncommonly well defined in a survivor of this heavily circulated early U.S. Mint silver type. The centers are softly struck, typical of both the type and die pairing, although the eagle is boldly outlined and detail on both sides sharpens considerably toward the borders, where complete denticulation is seen. Rich steel and copper-gray patina on surfaces that are a microscopically rough in areas, yet reveal no significant marks even under close scrutiny with a loupe.
LM-2 is one of two die marriages of the 1797 16 Stars Guide Book variety, and it is marginally less rare than LM-3. This issue as a whole can be elusive from a market availability standpoint, however, survivors legitimately scarce in an absolute sense and enjoying strong collector demand given the brevity of the Draped Bust, Small Eagle half dime type of 1796 to 1797.
