Lot Description
A very impressive example of this popular and historic piece. Produced in 1879 when J.W. Scott, a prominent numismatist at the time purchased the original Confederate half dollar die from Ebenezer Locke Mason. Mason, in turn, purchased it from the former chief coiner of the New Orleans Mint, Dr. B. F. Taylor. Upon his purchase of the die, Scott produced 500 Confederate Half Dollar Restrikes by plaining the reverse off 1861-dated half dollars. Scott then produced 500 of these "store card" tokens in white metal. This is one of the better known examples of the issue. A bold, flashy, Prooflike, luster beams from all around sharply struck and fully frosted devices. A very scarce issue and this one is very eye appealing! PCGS 19, NGC 12, CAC 5. The most recent example to sell in auction realized $5,640 in a very weak FUN auction in 2015. Prior to that, it had sold for as much as $7,475. VERY RARE any finer! Cert. Number 25599305 PCGS # 34040
