Lot Description

1871-S Liberty Half Eagle. AU-58 (PCGS). Brilliant surfaces with the majority of design features showing bold definition. Most of the original satiny mint luster still survives in the fields. The "S" mintmark is clear. Only 25,000 examples were minted and nearly all of them passed into channels of commerce. The vast majority seen are in EF and lower grades. PCGS has certified examples as AU-58 or finer on only 10 occasions over the years. David Akers in his half eagle monograph notes: "I have seen one AU piece but no strictly Uncirculated ones." A splendid opportunity for the specialist.
