- 1787/1788 Connecticut Copper. Miller 9-R, W-2860. Rarity-4+. Mailed Bust Left. VF-35 (PCGS).
146.7 grains. Mottled deep chocolate brown with lighter and darker shades blended in. Very finely granular under a glass but still showing good gloss. Obverse aligned to 7 o'clock, with long triangular denticles visible atop that side; reverse more off-center to 9 o'clock, with much of INDE off the planchet. Good sharpness and visual appeal. Date is complete and the overdate is plain to even the naked eye. A very scarce variety in nice grade, this example is similar to the Boyd-Ford coin that brought $3450 in 2005, much finer than the more recently sold SLT coin. This planchet is surprisingly unflawed, out of character for this variety.
PCGS# 352.
Provenance: From the John "Jack" Royse Collection.
