Lot Description: This is a remarkable, toned CHOICE Scarface. This variety, a TOP 100 VAM, called "the mother of all die breaks," is one of the most popular and highly sought varieties in the entire Morgan dollar series. Easily identifiable by the dramatic die break that begins at the dot in between the E and P on the obverse crosses the field, breaking over the bridge of Miss Liberty's nose, extending all the way through her cheek down to the neck and into the hair curls. Clearly this is a terminal die state; it is hard to imagine that many coins could have been struck after the die broke this badly before it completely split in half and was no longer serviceable. This is a beautifully toned example, of an issue that rarely comes so nice. An arching band of rainbow toning caresses the left side of the obverse, while the reverse has a thick halo of cranberry-red, deep violet, and tangerine-gold that yields to a brilliant silver center. For an O-mint, the strike is forceful, and the dramatic die break that gives this variety its colorful name is extremely bold. The eye appeal is very cool. VERY RARE any finer. PCGS 14, NGC 8. The current Collectors Universe value is listed at $7,250 and a coin like this should bring a strong bid. Only 8 are graded finer. This really CHOICE BU Scarface is worthy of a strong bid. Cert.
