Losbeschreibung: Only 7,451 half eagles were struck in 1799, and perhaps just 250 are known for all die pairings. Struck from a VERY RARE die marriage, this BD-8 is listed as a Rarity-6 with just 22-30 estimated to survive in all grades. This lovely AU example has a warm tangerine-gold overtone on both sides that is a delight to behold. Somewhat unevenly struck, with some minor weakness in areas as made, but the details show a wealth of detail remaining on both sides. The wear is generally problem free and honest over the highest points. Some minute mint made strike throughs are noted on the obverse. Struck from the cracked state of the dies with a dramatic bisecting obverse die crack and a number of cracks on the reverse. A perfect collector oriented example of this VERY RARE die marriage.
