Lot Description

Tompkins Die Stage 3/2. A lightly toned, generally silver gray piece with warmer sandy-russet highlights that appear to drift toward the borders. This is the first issue on which the Heraldic Eagle reverse appeared on the Draped Bust half dollar, and it is a scarce date for the type with a mere 30,289 pieces coined from two die pairings. Overton-101, offered here, is readily attributable by the presence of several prominent die rust lumps within the lower left reverse field, around the arrows.
