Lot Description

1843-O Liberty Seated Quarter. Briggs 3-F, FS-501. Large O. VF-35 (PCGS). This is a truly rare issue with the Large O reverse. To date PCGS records 11 grading events of this variety, the finest listed as AU-53. Recently discovered when a museum consigned coins to our auction by Jeff Ambio, and submitted to PCGS where the variety attribution is noted on their insert. Toned with typical light steel-gray with lilac and deeper gray accents. The strike is sharp too, and the wear is smooth only on the high points of the design. Extensive die rust is noted on the reverse with raised lumps seen above both of the eagle's wings, a lump below the first A and below RI of AMERICA. The Large O style mintmark has always been listed as rare and there are few records of these trading hands. An important offering for the specialist of the Liberty Seated Quarter series.
