Lot Description
Delicate toning in iridescent champagne-gold in a bit more pronounced on the reverse of this appealing Gem. The color is light and iridescent, allowing full appreciation of smooth, billowy mint frost. Pleasingly bold in strike, most design elements are sharp.<p>With the second lowest mintage of any Standing Liberty quarter - only the 1916 has a lower mintage - the 396,000 pieces that were struck at the San Francisco Mint in 1927 make this issue one of the classic rarities in its series. Little attention appears to have been paid to the 1927-S at the time of issue and as a consequence, the vast majority of examples entered circulation and remained in commerce until worn out or lost. Today it is estimated that about 95% of surviving specimens are no finer than Good-6. 1927-S quarters are especially difficult to locate in Mint State, and the acquisition of a premium Gem Uncirculated example such as this is a significant achievement.
