- 1881 Pattern Cent. Judd-1665, Pollock-1865. Rarity-6+. Proof-64 (PCGS). The obverse features a left-facing bust of Liberty that is very similar to that used to strike regular issue Liberty Nickels from 1883-1912. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is around the border and the date 1881 is below. The reverse design is simple with a Roman numeral I encircled by a wreath of corn and cotton. Struck in nickel with a plain edge.<br /> A scarce type with probably fewer than 25 examples known, the present specimen is sharply impressed with a veil of pale-silver tinting. Probably a Gem were it not for a wispy handling mark in the upper-left obverse field.
