Lot Description
1852 Liberty Head Double Eagle. FS-301. Repunched Date. AU-55 (PCGS). CAC. A fully original, near-fully lustrous example awash in blended honey-gold and pale orange colors. While the vast majority of 1852 double eagles extant were struck from "perfect" date dies, a small number of pieces are known with bold repunching to all four digits in the date. The underdigits are all evident to the north of the primary digits, and their remnants are clear enough to make this a naked eye variety. In fact, the 1852 FS-301 is one of the boldest varieties of the era and is very desirable. The offered coin is one of finest recorded on the PCGS Population Reportfor the attribution, and it is an important offering for advanced double eagle collectors and variety specialists. Provenance: From the Fairmont Collection - CAG Set. PCGS Population (FS-301 attribution only): 5; 18 finer (MS-63 finest). To view all items From the Fairmont Collection - CAG Set click here.
