Lot Description
Obv: Designed by William Barber, a head of Liberty faces left with 13 stars around the border and the date 1877 below; the second digit 7 in the date is distant from the denticles. Liberty is wearing a cap inscribed LIBERTY and decorated with ears of wheat, cotton leaves and bolls. Rev: A small eagle with spread wings is displayed on a shield with an olive sprig in its right talon and three arrows in its left talon. Around the shield is a band inscribed with the mottos IN GOD WE TRUST above, E PLURIBUS UNUM below. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is inscribed along the upper border and the denomination HALF DOLLAR is at the lower border. Visually pleasing surfaces are dressed in even, iridescent champagne-apricot toning that is a bit bolder on the obverse. The strike is crisp with razor sharp definition throughout the design. The finish is universally mirrored, the obverse with just a hint of light handling that precludes a full Gem rating.
The design is attributed to William Barber, and the obverse also appears on the pattern goloid dollars of 1878 to 1880. The uspatterns.com website accounts for only seven examples of Pollock-1690 in silver with the second digit 7 in the date distant from the denticles.
