Lot Description: The four die marriages known for the 1793 half cent were struck in Cohen number order, with C-3 struck on July 24, 1793, and included in the final delivery for the issue on July 26 (which also included the C-2 and C-4 varieties). All varieties of this issue are of comparable rarity today with approximately 250 to 325 coins known, and all are under extreme type collector pressure since the 1793 is the only half cent of the Head Left Liberty Cap design.<p>Offered is a particularly appealing Choice VF 1793 C-3 with warm, attractive, chestnut-brown color to both sides. There is some nice gloss to surfaces that retain plenty of bold detail and moderate, yet even wear. A dull mark on Liberty's jawline, faint graze at lower right obverse, and tiny edge nick on the reverse outside the final letter S in STATES are noted, but otherwise this piece is pleasingly smooth in-hand and under close scrutiny with a loupe. Given the rarity and consequent high cost of this issue graded EF through Mint State, many collectors will be drawn to this attractive offering from the Widmer Family Collection. It is a lovely 1793 half cent at the certified VF-30 level and would do equally well in a type or variety set.
