Tompkins Die Stage 1/1, Rea et al. Die State P. Undeniably original surfaces are boldly toned in antique golden-gray that appears to deepen a bit toward the rims. This piece is sharply struck and retains appreciable luster in a softly frosted texture. The repunched date (Large/Small 1s) obverse combined with the Large Letters, Long Arrowheads reverse of the issue confirms the Browning-5 attribution for this 1831 quarter. The Small Diameter Capped Bust quarter as a whole is much easier to collect than its Large Diameter predecessor, although we caution bidders that quality and originality are stumbling blocks for both types, as evidenced by limited CAC approval rates in the higher circulated grades.
