- The deep honey-gold surfaces are essentially unmarked to the unaided eye. Douglas Winter’s fine book on New Orleans gold coins notes the 1843-O Large Date quarter eagle is “the second rarest issue in the series but it remains relatively unknown outside of the specialist community.” Winter’s Die State I: “Perfect reverse.
