Tompkins Die Stage 1/2. An attractive example of both the type and Overton number, the present piece has light gray and golden-olive surfaces with some tinges of luster visible here and there. The coin has personality, for want of a better word, and will be an attractive addition to any collection. The production of half dollars jumped dramatically for the 1803-dated issue, rising to 188,234 from less than 30,000 the year prior. The vast majority of these were struck in 1804, as there were no 1804-dated half dollars issued for circulation. This high mintage makes the 1803 issue one of the most popular for type collectors, attractive and well preserved examples like the present always in demand.
