1793 S-3, Breen-4. Rarity-3-. Chain, AMERICA. EF-40 BN (NGC). This is a wonderful example with extremely sharp de¬ sign features and exceptional surfaces. Glossy medium olive- brown with very minor surface imperfections at left obverse. Although this is the most available die marriage among five different varieties of the Chain design, the present example is a marvelous high-grade example. A small lump on the reverse rim at 11:00 is the result of a die defect, not caused by later damage. This is as struck. Year in and year out the 1793 Chain cent has been an American land¬ mark. Such pieces were highly admired during the dawn of American nu¬ mismatic popularity in the 1850s, today they are even more so.
